Hanover County Public Schools provides a substance use prevention model that extends throughout the students' educational careers, starting in fourth grade. Programming includes the SODA program, D.A.R.E., lessons provided by Intervention Counselors and Health Education teachers in grades 6–10 and 7th UP program for grades 7 & 8. We focus prevention education on providing students with factual information about risk factors and health impacts, as well as protective factors and refusal skills.
Our Intervention Counselors are dedicated to providing substance use prevention and intervention for all of our middle and high schools. This includes prevention education, risk assessment, individual and group counseling, referral information, training and professional development for staff, parent workshops, and school wide programming and activities.
