  • Health Benefits

Health Insurance - Hanover County Public Schools offers health insurance through Aetna (833) 732-1971) and contributes toward the monthly premium. An opt-out credit is available for full-time and part-time employees who do not participate. Health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts are also available.

Transparency In Coverage - The Transparency in Coverage Rule requires self-insured group health plans to make Machine Readable Files (MRFs) publicly accessible beginning on July 1, 2022. Hanover County has self-insured medical plans for employees currently administered by Aetna.

To meet this requirement, for our Aetna plan, MRFs will be posted monthly on 2024 Aetna Medical. This location is publicly available and accessible to all, and no authentication is required. To link to the machine-readable files, please see the link above.

Dental Insurance - HCPS offers two plan options through Aetna Dental ((833) 732-1971).

Vision Supplemental Insurance - HCPS offers a vision care plan through VSP ((800) 216-6248).

  • Time Off Benefits (subject to change)

Paid Holidays – 10- month and 11-month personnel follow the School Calendar. 12-month full-time classified employees receive 13 holidays per year (9 designated dates & 4 compensatory floating dates).

Vacation – 12-month employees earn 1 day of leave per month for their first four years of service, 1.25 days for 5 – 9 years of service, and 1.5 days for 10 or more years of service.

Sick Leave – Full-time employees earn one sick leave day per month (10 – 12 depending on length of contract) with unlimited accrual. (Max 90 day accrual for VRS Hybrid participants). Part-time employees earn sick leave on a prorated basis.

Personal Leave – Full-time employees earn two days per year the first 3 years of service and 3 days per year with 3 or more years of service.

  • Savings & Retirement

Retirement – Full-time employees participate in the Virginia Retirement System (VRS).

Retirement Savings Plans – HCPS offers 403(b) and 457 plans through Empower Retirement, which allow employees to set aside pre-tax dollars for retirement. HCPS contributes $250/year toward 403(b) account for part-time employees.

Premium Conversion/Section 125 – HCPS allows employees to take insurance premium deductions on pre-tax basis.

Flexible Spending Accounts – HCPS offers a Medical FSA and a Dependent Care FSA for eligible expenses.

  • Income Protection & Security

Life Insurance – Paid for at 100% by HCPS for full-time VRS eligible employees only. The benefit is two times your annual salary for natural death and four times your annual salary for accidental death. Additional life insurance is available for purchase to cover your spouse and children or to increase your employee benefit.

Sick Leave Bank – Income protection for up to 45 days due to a catastrophic illnesses/injury. Available to all full and part-time benefit-eligible employees who enroll. (VRS hybrid participants not eligible since STD is provided)

Long-Term Disability – Paid for 100% by HCPS for full and part-time employees. Benefits begin at 180 days and offers up to 60% income replacement.

Short-Term Disability –Optional benefit for short-term disability. Employees may choose a 14 or 44 day waiting period and 40% or 60% income replacement for up to 6 months. (VRS Hybrid participants receive other Short Term Disability coverage at no cost following one year of employment)

Cancer, Critical Illness, and Accident Protection – Optional supplemental plans with AFLAC designed to pay the individual during unexpected incidents.
