Beaverdam Elementary School Construction
Hanover County Public Schools is proud to be replacing Beaverdam Elementary School with a new school building scheduled to open for the 2026-27 school year.
Timeline To Date
- May 2018: At a School Board work session, Board members learned through the results of a study requested by the Board that Beaverdam Elementary School is in need of renovation.
- September 2018: The School Board reaches consensus to prioritize the renovation of BES among other projects identified in the study.
- May 2023: The Capital Improvement Plan adopted by the School Board includes the renovation of BES.
- October 2023: HCPS and Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates host input sessions (in-person and virtual) with students, faculty and staff, and the community to garner input on the design of the school.
- December 2023: The School Board reaches consensus to move forward with plans to replace the building rather than renovate the school. A final determination will come at the conclusion of the annual budget process. Read more here.
- January 2024: Funding for replacement rather than renovation is included in the proposed Capital Improvement Plan. Additionally, the Hanover County School Board submits a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) application to the Hanover County Planning Department to request review and approval of the site plan for the construction of a replacement elementary school at the Beaverdam Elementary School site.
- February 2024: The School Board’s approved Capital Improvement Plan includes funding for replacement rather than renovation. Additionally, Hanover County Public Schools hosts an informational meeting to share an overview of the proposed site plan and provide an opportunity to ask questions.
- March 2024: The schematic design is complete. Additionally, teachers provide input on the school design at a teacher engagement session.
- April 2024: The Conditional Use Permit application is approved by the Hanover County Planning Commission.
- May 2024: The School Board's adopted Capital Improvement Plan includes funding for replacement rather than renovation; the Board of Supervisors unanimously approves the Conditional Use Permit application.
- June 2024: Site development and design continue.
- July 2024: Site development and design continue.
- August 2024: Site development and design continue.
- September 2024: Site development and design continue.
- October 2024: Site development and design continue.
- November 2024: Site development and design continue. The School Board receives an update on the design of the school, including the renderings of both the inside and outside of the new school building.
Public Meetings
HCPS and Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates, the Charlottesville-based architectural firm that is overseeing the renovation of the school, sought input through a series of meetings with students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. The community meetings were held as follows: Monday, October 9 at 6:30 p.m. at BES and Thursday, October 26 at 6:30 p.m. (Virtual).
The Hanover County School Board has submitted a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) application to the Hanover County Planning Department to request review and approval of the site plan for the construction of a replacement elementary school at the Beaverdam Elementary School site.
As part of this process, Hanover County Public Schools hosted a Hanover County Planning Department informational meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27 in the BES cafeteria to share an overview of the proposed site plan and provide an opportunity to ask questions.
At its meeting on Thursday, April 18, the Hanover County Planning Commission considered the Conditional Use Permit (CUP) application that was filed by the Hanover County School Board for the replacement school.
