The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation has named Hanover County Public Schools (HCPS) as a “Best Community for Music Education” for the 12th year in a row.
“We remain incredibly proud of our many music programs, offerings, and opportunities that are crucial to our students’ learning and school experience. Music plays such an important role in education, and Hanover County Public Schools is committed to supporting the arts,” said Dr. Michael Gill, Superintendent of Schools. “I am especially grateful for our talented and dedicated music educators and the many robust and innovative opportunities that they provide for our students and community.”
Hanover County Public Schools is
one of only 25 school divisions in Virginia to achieve the coveted status this year. There are 131 school divisions in the Commonwealth.
The NAMM Foundation, a nonprofit organization, awards this designation to school divisions and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment to offering comprehensive music education to all students. It further serves to recognize the outstanding efforts of teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders who have made music education part of the curriculum.
“Credit is due to the passionate music teachers throughout Hanover County Public Schools. Together, with our talented students, supportive school leaders, and engaged community members, they collectively elevate Hanover as an exceptional environment for music education,” said Dr. Keith Matthews, HCPS Performing Arts Curriculum Specialist. “The ‘Best Community for Music Education’ recognition underscores the significant value HCPS attributes to music and the arts within the educational framework.”
To earn the recognition, the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas reviewed specifics regarding HCPS and about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs.
