Dear Families, Faculty, and Staff,
At its meeting last night, the Hanover County School Board approved the 2022-23 school year calendar. The calendar is attached to this email and can also be found
on the calendar webpage.
Please note that the 2022-23 school year is slated to begin on Tuesday, September 6 and end on Thursday, June 15.
Similar to the start of the past two school years, we will limit attendance on the first day of school (September 6) to those students making the most significant transition, such as kindergarteners, third graders attending John M. Gandy Elementary School, sixth graders, and freshmen. All students will go to school on Wednesday, September 7.
Here are other notable highlights that we hope will be helpful as you begin planning for next school year.
- Two full weeks of Winter Break (December 19 through December 30);
- Spring Break the first full week of April (April 3 through April 7);
- Two
Flexible Learning Days (Friday, November 4 and Friday, March 31);
- The last day of school will be Thursday, June 15.
As you may recall the Calendar Committee's presentation last month proposed a pre-Labor Day start for the 2023-24 school year, with the school year beginning on Monday, August 21 and ending on Friday, May 31. The School Board did not vote on that proposal last night and will instead consider it at a future meeting. We will certainly keep you updated on the status of the proposal.
(April 13, 2022 Update: The School Board has resumed discussions on the 2023-24 calendar and is accepting public input through Friday, May 27.)
The 2022-23 calendar, as well as the pre-Labor Day start proposal for the 2023-24 school year, were developed by a committee of parents, teachers, support employees, and administrators, as well as in coordination with the other major school divisions in the metro-Richmond area.
Thank you to everyone who submitted questions or comments during the calendar planning process.
