Accreditation and Accountability houses a variety of departments, including standardized testing and data management, student enrollment services, school counseling, career counselingsubstance use intervention, and home schooling. Accreditation and Accountability is also responsible for continuous school improvement throughout the division as well as the development and implementation of the Comprehensive Plan. It is responsible for state reporting, reviewing and approving research requests, the development of the school division calendar, the Program of Studies, and the Parent-Student Handbook.

Accreditation Process

All Hanover County Public Schools are fully accredited by the Commonwealth of Virginia. In order for a school to earn the “Fully Accredited” distinction, it must attain the benchmarks established by the board in English, math, science, and social studies. For more information, please see the Virginia Department of Education Standards of Accreditation.

Assessment & Accountability

The Standards of Learning (SOL) provide a framework for minimum performance standards required in English, math, science, and social studies as well as other subjects, at each grade level and/or course in public schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Hanover County Public School students participate in the SOL testing program in grades and courses designated by the Virginia Department of Education. Performance results indicate a student’s proficiency level in each course tested.

Pupil-Teacher Ratios

students in classroomPupil to teacher ratios have been calculated to reflect actual core class sizes. Resource teachers such as art, music, physical education, special education (collaborative), remediation, ESL, world language, secondary elective teachers, counselors, and librarians have not been included in the actual core class size calculations.

Home Schooling

In Virginia, parents must ensure that a child attends school in compliance with the state compulsory attendance law as specified in § 22.1-254 of the Code of Virginia when the child has reached his 5th birthday on or before September 30 of any school year and has not passed his 18th birthday. The compulsory attendance law requires that a child subject to that law attend a private or public school or receive an education through one of the other Code alternatives to school attendance unless the child falls within one of the Code exceptions. Home instruction or home schooling is one alternative to school attendance, and parents may home school “when the requirements of § 22.1-254.1 of the Code have been satisfied.” For more information, please view our Home Schooling page.
