Dear Families,

We hope you are well. We are writing to share with you an exciting update regarding the technology challenges that have impacted our school division.

Working with our external cybersecurity experts and other professionals, we have made significant progress early this week to mitigate the technology challenges and resolve this incident.

Specifically, please note the following:

- Internet service has been restored to our schools and offices. There may still be intermittent impact as we fully restore all resources over the next few days.
- Earlier today, most HCPS faculty and staff had their devices updated and cleared at faculty meetings prior to the start of the school day. While some resources remain inaccessible, our staff members are beginning to use both their devices and the internet to access PowerSchool, Schoology, and other platforms!
- As we shared on Monday, student Chromebooks are not impacted. Students may again use their Chromebooks at school as we work to return to normal operations.
- We are able to once again begin using technology in instruction.
- The investigation into this incident remains ongoing.
- As we shared last week, recognizing the importance of transparency, we assure you that should student information have been improperly accessed, the necessary notifications will be made in compliance with School Board Policy, as well as state and federal law.
- We will continue to provide additional information as it becomes available and as permitted by our team of experts who are guiding these efforts.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this disruption to our normal operations.

Original March 12, 2026 Message:

Dear Families,

We are writing to share with you an important update regarding the disruption to our internet and other Hanover County Public Schools (HCPS) systems.

We are currently working with cybersecurity professionals and others to investigate and mitigate a possible data incident impacting HCPS. While we are limited in what we can share at this time, please know the following:

- As soon as we became aware of this incident, we immediately engaged cybersecurity professionals, outside legal counsel, and other state and federal officials to remediate and investigate the incident. The investigation and work to resolve this matter are ongoing.
- We have been and continue to follow their expert guidance, including the timing and content of our communications and other best practices.
- We acknowledge that situations such as this are concerning, and we share your concern.
- While, for important reasons, we are very limited in what we are able to share with you at this time, please be assured that we will provide additional information as it becomes available and as permitted by our team of experts who are guiding these efforts.

At this time, internet service and multiple HCPS systems remain unavailable across the school division. As we shared yesterday afternoon, we do not yet have an estimated timeline for when service will return to normal.

Please be assured that teaching and learning will continue. Our teachers are planning for instruction that does not require the use of technology for at least the next week. Please contact your student’s school via phone should you need to reach a staff member.

While HCPS student Chromebooks are on a separate Google domain and do not appear to be impacted at this time, we will temporarily discontinue use of Chromebooks as an added precaution. Please be assured that HCPS takes information security seriously and is taking additional steps to protect HCPS data.

While we work to mitigate this incident, we appreciate your patience and understanding in recognition of the disruption to our normal operations. Again, while, for important reasons, we are very limited in what we are able to share with you at this time, we will provide additional information as it becomes available and as we are able.

Thank you.
