Amber dePass, a fifth grade teacher at Battlefield Park Elementary School (BPES), has been named this year’s Hanover County Public Schools (HCPS) Teacher of the Year.
Ms. dePass, a Virginia Commonwealth University alumna, is in her 18th year of teaching in HCPS, all of which has taken place at BPES. She is known for her relationship building, engagement with students, and fun and interactive learning.
“This has been very surreal. I don't do what I do for recognition. But it does feel fantastic to be acknowledged for doing what you love and were always meant to do,” said Ms. dePass, who has taught fifth grade for all but one of her 18 years in HCPS. “The most emotional part is the outpouring of love I have received since this announcement - especially the huge number of previous students and families cheering the decision.”
Dr. Lisa Pennycuff, Superintendent of Schools, made the surprise announcement on Thursday, January 8 during a special staff meeting at the elementary school as Ms. dePass’ co-workers, family, and friends cheered on.
“I feel extremely honored to represent my school and the county as an outstanding educator,” Ms. dePass said. “However, I have been supported through the years by amazing and talented family and friends as well as surrounded here at BPES by the best - past and present students, families, colleagues, and administration - who all deserve to share this recognition.”
Ms. dePass said that her favorite part of her job is building relationships with students, “preparing them for what's next and watching them achieve success through middle and high school and beyond.”
BPES Principal Jackie McCaleb said those relationships are what make Ms. dePass such a transformative educator.
“Every child who walks into Ms. dePass’ classroom becomes her child. She sets high expectations, encourages them consistently, and loves them deeply,” Mrs. McCaleb said. “Under her guidance, students grow not only academically but emotionally, leaving her room smarter, more confident, and ready to take on the world.”
She added: “Her student relationships extend far beyond the school year; she has celebrated countless high school and college graduations, attended weddings, and even the occasional baby shower for former students. She makes an impact that lasts a lifetime.”
Ms. dePass will now compete for the Virginia Department of Education Region I Teacher of the Year award.
Each year, HCPS selects one teacher for this distinguished award who is actively and meaningfully involved in the school and community and can serve as a role model and ambassador for teachers in the division.
