December 10 Morning Update:

Dear Families, Faculty, and Staff,

We hope you are warm and well. Our team has continued to assess road conditions as a result of this week’s inclement weather. While our valued partners with the Virginia Department of Transportation made progress overnight, unfortunately, travel conditions across Hanover County have not significantly improved this morning as we had hoped, especially on secondary roads and in neighborhoods. Several examples of these road conditions documented by our Transportation Department this morning can be found in this folder. These icy and snowy road conditions remain hazardous and unsafe for our buses, student drivers, staff, and families.

As a result, HCPS will be CLOSED on Wednesday, December 10. Employees use Code 2. All 12-month employees report to work two hours late.

Please note that all after-school activities and events are canceled for Wednesday, December 10.

We understand this continues to be disruptive and sincerely appreciate your patience as we work to make the best possible decisions for our students and staff. We will communicate any further delays or closures that may be necessary as quickly as possible.

Please be assured that our goal remains to get our students and staff back to school as safely and quickly as possible, recognizing the impact of extended closures on our community. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this inclement weather.

Please also note that a communication is forthcoming regarding the impact of today’s school closure on the 2025-26 school calendar. Please stay tuned.

As always, we appreciate your support. Thank you.

Stay safe and warm,
Hanover County Public Schools

Original Message (December 9)

Dear Families, Faculty, and Staff,

We hope you are warm and well. Yesterday’s inclement weather has created hazardous travel conditions on many secondary roadways across Hanover. While some melting has occurred, below freezing temperatures are forecasted overnight, preventing further melting. Please note that we are in direct communication with our valued partners with the Virginia Department of Transportation to assist in the clearing of roadways.

As a precaution and to allow our team sufficient time to fully assess the most up-to-date forecast and travel conditions, our facilities, and our buses, HCPS will be opening on a two-hour delay on Wednesday, December 10 for all students and staff.

Please note that a two-hour delay is intended to allow HCPS staff additional time to further assess conditions and make a final determination on whether or not to open the school division. We will communicate any additional closings or delays that may be necessary as quickly as possible so you can begin making the necessary arrangements for your student.

We understand this is disruptive and sincerely appreciate your patience as we work to make the best possible decisions for our students and staff.

As always, we appreciate your support. Thank you.

Stay safe and warm,

Hanover County Public Schools
