Dear Families, Faculty, and Staff,

We hope you are well. We are writing today to share with you an important update regarding the replacement of Washington-Henry Elementary School (WHES).

As you may know, a facilities study commissioned by the Hanover County School Board in 2018 recommended a replacement of WHES. Funding for the replacement of the school was included in the five-year Capital Improvement Plan that the School Board adopted in May 2024. The design of the replacement school is taking place this school year with construction the following two school years. The new school building is scheduled to open for the 2027-28 school year.

With the opening of the new Ashland Elementary School over the summer, the replacements of Battlefield Park and Beaverdam elementary schools that are in progress, and now the replacement of WHES, we are greatly excited about the continued investment in the future of our school buildings, recognizing that they will serve generations to come.

As part of the process for this project, HCPS and Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates, the architectural firm that is overseeing the design of the project, are seeking input through a series of meetings with students, faculty, staff, and our broader community.

The input meetings will be held as follows:

- Student Focus Group: Wednesday, October 23
- Faculty and Staff: Wednesday, October 23
- Community: Tuesday, October 29 at 6 p.m. at WHES (following the Book Fair)
- Community: Monday, November 18 at 6:30 p.m. (Virtual); more information on this meeting will be shared in the near future.

The community meetings are open to the public. If you have any questions about the meetings or the project, please email [email protected].

Please be assured that we will continue to keep you updated throughout the duration of this project, including via this specific website that has been created to provide additional information on our renovation.

We hope you will join us in our excitement for this project and we look forward to your participation throughout this process. Thank you.
