Full Message/Details:
Dear Families,
We hope you have had a great week. We are writing today with important information regarding artificial intelligence (AI) in our schools.
As a school division, we take great pride in preparing our students for life beyond high school, equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to be empowered learners, responsible citizens, globally engaged communicators, and resilient individuals. We call this
The Hanover Promise.
To accomplish this, we must regularly evaluate and adapt to meet the evolving demands of modern technology. This includes integrating new technologies, such as AI, to help ensure that our students develop essential digital literacy and critical thinking skills. In short,
we always aim to provide our students with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed well beyond their time in our schools.
As part of our ongoing efforts in this regard, we have created artificial intelligence guidelines to empower our educators, students, and families with the knowledge and skills to harness the potential of generative artificial intelligence responsibly and innovatively. The guidelines provide practical insights and best practices for ensuring that teachers and students do not inadvertently violate our
Acceptable Use Policy or privacy laws related to AI use.
While we encourage you to read the full document,
please note the following:
- As with any information source, students must always give credit and cite sources when they use someone else's work or ideas as a part of their own.
- Students should always verify the accuracy and credibility of a source before trusting the information created by generative AI, as with any information source.
- Our educators are to never provide personally identifiable information of students when utilizing AI.
We continue to recognize the vital role that you (our families) play in your student’s education and are committed to working with you as technology continues to evolve. To that end, we encourage you to discuss this topic with your student. The
fifth page of the guidelines is dedicated to information for families and includes links to other resources as well.
Together, we will promote the appropriate use of this technology, including the important role of academic integrity, as we prepare our students for the world in which they will live and work.
If you have any questions about these guidelines, please email
[email protected]. Thank you.
