The School Renaming Committee has chosen the three finalists for new names for the schools formerly known as Lee-Davis High School and Stonewall Jackson Middle School.
The selections come after the committee received more than 10,000 responses to a poll it conducted from Friday, August 21 through Thursday, August 27. Hanover County students, faculty, staff, parents, and other community stakeholders are encouraged to complete the committee’s new poll on the finalists, which can be accessed
here.
The poll will stay open through Thursday, September 3.
These are the three options for the
middle school and the committee’s rationale, in alphabetical order:
-
Creek Run: Represents the nearby creeks in the area that feed into the twin rivers, and suggests the flow from middle to high school.
-
Mechanicsville: Reflects the geographical location served by the school and is easily identifiable to anyone in the Mechanicsville community.
-
Willow Branch: Recognizes the prevalence of the strong and flexible trees found in the area and represents what our students strive to be.
These are the three options for the
high school, in alphabetical order:
-
Clearview: Promotes the perspective that the school should provide a clear view for the future and is a focal point in the Mechanicsville community.
-
Mechanicsville: Reflects the geographical location served by the school and is easily identifiable to anyone in the Mechanicsville community.
-
Twin Rivers: Pays homage to the Pamunkey and Chickahominy rivers, which provide the natural boundaries for the school community.
The committee, approved by the School Board at its August 11 meeting, is made up of community members, parents, and students. It received more than 3,000 nominations from August 12 through August 19 and narrowed those options down to 14 on August 20.
The panel will submit a single name for the high school and a single name for the middle school for the School Board’s consideration by September 8.
School Board policy stipulates that schools cannot be named after any person (living or deceased). The policy lists geographic location, environmental features, and historical considerations as factors for consideration.
Once the School Board has chosen new school names, new mascots will also be selected in a school-based decision.
